College Students to the Rescue

A GROUP of kind-hearted students from Cornwall College came to the rescue of disaster relief charity ShelterBox recently when they volunteered their time to put together over 300 essential aid boxes to help the worthy cause.

Thirteen students, 10 of which are studying Sport and Public Services courses at St Austell and the other three on IT and Sport programmes at Camborne, gave up their time to assist in the charity’s aid effort after being contacted by ShelterBox desperately looking for volunteers.

The international disaster relief charitable trust had a slot on a Boeing 747 on Friday 5th February to the Dominican Republic to send aid to the victims affected by the Haiti earthquake and urgently needed to pack 1,800 boxes by the Thursday evening. The students jumped at the chance and managed to amass a total of 320 boxes in their four hour stint.

“The students’ enthusiasm and effort was truly remarkable and we were really grateful for their support,” said Jessica Stanton, Operations Coordinator at ShelterBox. “Volunteers are crucial to the work of ShelterBox; without them we couldn’t survive. Along with the students’ contribution, the aid sent was enough for 18,000 Haitians. To date over 7,000 boxes have been delivered, which equates to essential support for over 70,000 people.”

ShelterBox responds instantly to natural and manmade disasters by delivering boxes of aid to those who are most in need. Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent, blankets, stove and other essential equipment to use while they are displaced or made homeless as a result of the tragedy.

Nat Mitchell, a Youth Worker from Cornwall College, said: “I was so proud of the students; they really grafted hard, listened well and brought energy to the rest of the volunteers helping out. When Jess from ShelterBox contacted me on the Monday in need of volunteers, my colleague Jo Plester from St Austell and I rallied up our students and by the Tuesday we had 13 student volunteers ready to help. Their hard work and dedication truly shows that youth out there are willing to lend a hand.”

The students involved were National Diploma Public Services’ students from St Austell: Luke Chapman, Jodie Bray, Sarah Hawken, Ryan Goodwin and Stephen Mitchell, National Diploma Sport students from St Austell: Tom Smith, James Shaw, Gerad Coenen, John Major and Callum Evison. From Camborne were IT students Sean Collis and James Searle and Sport student Charlotte Hamilton.

“At Cornwall College we are proud of our students, both in terms of their academic achievements, but also in the kindness and support they offer others in times of need,” said Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College. “ShelterBox do such a wonderful job and I’m delighted that the students got involved and were of such value to the worthy cause.”
